Exploring the Boundaries of Science: Research on the Edge
This year's gathering and theme are dedicated to the memory of Dr. Maya Bhatia who spoke so eloquently about her work last year at this event. Dr. Bhatia lost her life during a tragic accident while conducting field research in the high arctic.

CMASTE and Edmonton Regional Science teachers are very pleased to announce our speakers for this year's gathering on May 10, 2024:

Dr. Jen Beverly: Associate Professor, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences - Having experience as a firefighter informs Dr. Beverly's work surrounding wildland fire science where she develops wildfire analytics to aid in the prediction and management of wildfires in Alberta and beyond.

Dr. Nina Samson: Radiation Oncologist, Cross Cancer Institute – Dr. Samson will describe her work with radiation, a powerful tool in cancer management, where technology and biology intersect. She will discuss how radiation does its work, who it can help, and dispel some common myths about radiation.

Dr. Chris Herd (aka Space Rock Doc): Professor, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences -- Dr. Herd is an internationally-recognized expert in the geology of Mars and Martian meteorites, and a member of the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover mission. This work has revolutionized the scientific understanding of the planetary bodies from which the samples were collected and point the way for future missions.

Dr. Martin Sharp: Professor, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences -- Dr. Sharp is a glaciologist with particular interests in interactions between glaciers and the climate system, and in hydrochemical processes in glacial environments, especially in the high arctic. Dr. Sharp worked closely with Dr. Bhatia, and will describe how this research, while risky and dangerous at times, is important as we experience a changing planet.
