Join the Emily Carr Chronicles Bus Tour Show & Tell. In partnership with Janie's Got a Bus, we'll visit the 12 locations significant to Emily Carr's life story in and around the James Bay area in Victoria.

The tour starts at 11:30 in the parking lot of the James Bay Inn and ends around 2:30 pm back at the James Bay Inn. Our last stop on the tour before we return will be at her gravesite in Ross Bay Cemetery. Along the way, we'll visit her family home, the Carr House, her sister's houses, the House of All Sorts, the Emily Carr Stone Footbridge in Beacon Hill Park, her father's store on Wharf Street, the Emily Carr Statue in front of the Empress Hotel, the Crystal Gardens where she made an important speech in 1930 and other locations she made special in her painting and her writing.

We'll also get to know more about the important people in her ilfe such as her sisters, her handyman Willie Newcombe, her listening ladies, her childhood art instructors, her years in Vancouver, Ira Dilworth, Lauren Harris, Woo, the Elephant, her lifelong friend Sophie Frank and her Indigenous guides for hjer two lengthy sketching trips in Haida Swaii in 1912 and 1928.

Along the way, we'll look at 12 of her most famous paintings and what about them makes them so highly valued today. Her painting Crazy Stairs (1928) was purchased for $3.3 million by the Audain Gallery in 2013 , breaking her previous record, the third highest amount paid at auction for a Canadian artist.

At about the halfway point, we'll stop for refreshments at For Good Measure on the corner of Niagara and Government. You're welcome to bring your own refreshments and snacks or purchase them enroute.

Limited to 10 participants. Early bird rate: $35 until June 7, $40 thereafter,

  • Janie's been driving an adventure bus for more than 20 years around Vancouver Island. She's new to Emily Carr but now smitten. Because she can couple this bus tour during her layover on her bi-weekly Victoria route, I can offer the Emily Carr Bus tour at a cost affordable rate while she is in Victoria as long as I buy her lunch.
  • Marilyn's not new to Emily Carr, she's been giving courses, walks, talks, and presentations on Emily Carr for many years.

OF SPECIAL NOTE:

  • Participants are not expected to get on and off the bus at each or any of the 12 locations, if they so choose.
  • There will always be one of us on the bus at all times including the coffee and washroom break at the halfway point.
  • We anticipate that some participants will want to bring their own snacks and refreshments
  • Walkers can be stored safely on the bus.
