Ethics in Coaching: Should we talk about Suicide?

Lynn Thorsell, MA, PCC and Maddy Brown, CPQC and Lu Ripley

As coaches, we recognize the boundary between coaching and mental health care – but how do we navigate the space between them? We are well trained in supporting our clients to explore their experiences more deeply, but few of us may know how to recognize or respond to a client having thoughts of suicide. What would be most ethical? Is referral to another profession the best response?

Join us in considering these questions in the context of the ICF Code of Ethics.

  • The ethics of talking about suicide
  • The training and skills required to have those conversations
  • A coach's story
  • How the ICF Code of Ethics relates to this topic
  • What's ethical and possible for us as coaching professionals
