Join Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) in our 2022 riparian rehabilitation activities in Girardi Creek.

About this event

WHY?

Girardi Creek is a tributary to the Crowsnest River, and an important habitat for threatened Westslope Cutthroat Trout. Undesignated off-highway vehicle trails and crossings in the area are being reclaimed to prevent negative impacts on Westslope Cutthroat Trout habitat. Volunteers are needed following heavy equipment work, to complete revegetation efforts in reclaimed areas.

Volunteers can contribute to the project through three workdays:

  • Willow harvesting
  • Riparian planting (2 workdays)

WILLOW HARVESTING (Oct 4)

Volunteers will harvest and prepare live willow stakes that will be used during restoration activities. This involves cutting, trimming, and bundling willow cuttings.

RIPARIAN PLANTING (Oct 5 & 6)

Volunteers will plant the previously harvested willow stakes. These bioengineering activities will help stabilize slumping banks and recover damaged riparian areas.

WHERE?

We will meet at the Tim Hortons in Blairmore and walk to the Frayn Conservation property across the street to harvest willows, or travel in a convoy to the Girardi Creek staging area for the riparian planting.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

All tools and equipment will be provided. Please dress appropriately for field work and the weather. Gloves will be provided, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own. In addition, please bring:

  • Appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear that will likely get wet and dirty
  • Extra layers and socks in case of cold or wet conditions (recommended)
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Water and something warm to drink
