Health Coaching and eHealth Technology:
Behavior change and system transformation

PRESENTER:
Harvey Skinner, PhD,
Professor of Psychology & Global Health
Faculty of Health, York University, Toronto

ABSTRACT: Health coaching is an increasingly popular role that facilitates health behavior change in people/patients with varying health risks and conditions across social-economic levels and cultures. When connected with 24 hour/7 day/week smartphone-based counseling, health coaching is a promising public health and health care innovation for reaching people, communities and whole populations. Health coaching services are becoming more common, however the term 'health coaching' has vastly different meanings, and methodologies differ widely amongst providers. So, what is the evidence? This presentation will examine how health practitioners can integrate behavior change programs with rapidly evolving mobile technology apps and eHealth technologies. Emphasis is given to approaches that are grounded in state-of-the-art behavior change models and evidence based interventions, as well as their adaptation to people/patients from diverse cultural, social and life stage contexts. This session will also include several experiential learning practices on behavior change.
