About this event

What will be covered in this workshop?

Ever write a short story, only to doubt it? Find yourself apologising for your poems when sharing them with others? Do you lie awake at night thinking that your novel might be complete rubbish?

Welcome to the world of the Internal Critic.

Self-doubt & self-criticism can be one of a writer’s greatest challenges. In this interactive, informal and supportive workshop, participants will be introduced to Impostor Syndrome and its effects on self-belief. Throughout the session, participants will be guided carefully through shared experiences of the Internal Critic, with a focus on discussion. In the second half, seasoned workshop facilitator Rosie Garland (who has her own, noisy, Internal Critic!) will introduce fresh approaches to dealing with blocks and hurdles, exploring strategies and sharing ideas. The workshop aims to give participants a sense of understanding, possibility and renewed confidence in their relationship with writing.

The workshop is designed for writers at all stages and in all forms: poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, plays or other forms entirely. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss writing obstacles, connect with other writers, share enthusiasm and (optionally) their own experiences. They will also be provided with targeted resources before and after the workshop.

Participants Will Take Away

  • Deeper understanding of the impact of the Internal Critic.
  • Strategies for dealing with the Internal Critic.
  • Community & shared understanding that you are not alone.
  • Resources and reading list.

There will be an optional opportunity to share during the workshop.

Suitable for all levels.
