Join us for a Historic Hike in Durham!

Ready to explore the rich history of Durham? Lace up your hiking boots and meet us at Riverside Park for a journey through time.

In the late 19th Century, the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada was the major railway in the Ontario and Quebec, connecting Toronto to Montreal, and parts of the eastern U.S.. Part of it tracked through Durham and we'll be exploring the crossing site at the river and walking the old GT wye near Douglas Street. Our historian-in-residence and owner of Marathon of History Magazine and podcast Mat Johnson will be your guide, and will be providing fascinating insights into the function of the wye, the natural history and topography in the area (including swampland), and lead you to hidden gems and iconic landmarks. Keep your camera ready!

This session is intended for beginners (10+) - the pace will be comfortable; the total walk will be about 2 -3 km and take about 45 minutes, with more time for questions. For greater comfort, wear your running shoes, sunscreen and hat and bring water.

Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a fun outdoor adventure, this event is perfect for all ages. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to experience Durham's past in a whole new way!
