About this event

IHSA's Labour Management & 3M presents Bridging the Gap: A Safety Symposium an exciting event aimed at fostering collaboration and improving workplace safety practices. Join us on Tuesday, June 18th, 2024 at 21 Voyager Crt S. for a day filled with insightful discussions, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities.

From 7:15 am onwards, participants will rotate through six engaging 50-minute sessions covering a wide range of topics, including:

Session 1: Dropped Object Protection

Every day, on job sites around the world, tools and other objects are dropped from heights, causing injury and damage. This session will highlight the importance of fall protection for our tools when working near an edge. This training aims to describe the concepts, principles, and equipment, focusing on how and why to “stop the drop” before it starts.

Session 2: Respiratory and Hearing Protection

Overview of the basics of respiratory hazards (CSA & NIOSH), the types and styles of respiratory protection, and the factors in choosing a respirator.

Discussion on the proper precautions to help prevent noise-induced hearing loss, how hearing loss can affect your quality of life, the health effects of loud noises, and how to reduce the noise at the source.

Session 3: Science of Fit

The objective of this training is to get the achievable intended protection from all PPE worn together. The compatibility and comfort with how PPE fits the individual wearer will address in this training. Having incompatible PPE can pose a risk to your workers.

Session 4: Leading Edge & Fall Clearance (SRL)

Understanding the hazards and the applicable standards of leading/sharp edge work (CSAZ259.2.2-17) This intel is vital in protecting your workers at height, especially in construction. In addition, this training will tie into how to calculate fall clearance.

Session 5: Fall Protection on Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP)

This session will focus on vehicles exposing workers to the hazards of working height are ever presented. MEWPs can present many challenges for employee safety when operating. These concerns are present while employees are entering and exiting the platform, transitioning or maneuvering the equipment around the jobsite, unloading and loading the equipment from the transport trailer and working at height or during boom extension.

You will also learn the difference between fall prevention and fall arrest systems, and where and when to use each. You’ll see the difference shock absorption makes in drop tests. And you’ll gain a better understanding of the ABCs of personal fall protection

Session 6: Guide to Abrasive Safety & Process Improvements

This session will focus on four principal hazards associated with the use of abrasives; Hand-arm vibration, Airborne particles, Noise & Injury. We will share and demonstrate how 3M’s proprietary abrasive technologies can help prevent injuries while also improving throughput and decreasing costs within primary abrasive operations like grinding, cutting, and sanding.

Whether you are a safety professional, supervisor, or worker, this symposium is designed to provide valuable insights and practical tools that can be implemented in your workplace.
