The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) welcomes you to the second discussion of a webinar series co-hosted with Southern Voice and the Institute of Development Studies: In Conversation With.

This series will provide a unique opportunity for researchers, international stakeholders and policymakers from around the world to connect and share evidence on the economic, social, and political challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, to inform polices to recover from the pandemic with more inclusive and equitable societies.

This second conversation will be led by Stephany Griffith-Jones and Shakira Mustapha on Wednesday, December 16th, 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. EST time. This discussion is the first in a mini-series that will explore the macro-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the growing public debt in emerging economies.

Dr Mustapha will discuss the growing public debt in lower-income economies, its composition, and associated risks. Dr Griffith-Jones will discuss the need and recent initiatives for debt relief, to promote sustained recovery.

This will be followed by reactions from three experts, all participating in the IDRC-funded research initiative that addresses the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic:

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) funded a three-year, CA$25-million rapid response initiative that supports 21 research projects. These projects - with research across 42 countries in the Global South - seek to understand the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic, improve existing responses, and generate better policy options for recovery.
