About this event

  • 3 hours

In Person Event! Participants will receive an up close, hands-on experience that provides critical insight into the world of dementia. This program is invaluable to people who are caring for a person with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. When someone is diagnosed with dementia, it affects everyone: the family, friends, and professional caregivers. The Virtual Dementia Tour® helps shed light on some of the responsive behaviours exhibited by individuals living with dementia.

FAQs

What can I expect?

Participants go through the Tour individually. To register, you will select a specific time slot within the 3 hour period. On arrival at your designated time you will be outfitted with gear that alters your senses (e.g., vision, hearing, touch) in order to experience some of the challenges faced by older people living with dementia. Participants are asked to wear socks and closed toe foot wear. You will have an opportunity to reflect on and talk about your experience. Please allocate approximately 60 minutes for the entire experience and Tour. If you are interested in doing the Tour as part of a small group, please contact the organizer.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Please contact Dawn dlockhart@alzheimerdurham.com if you have any questions, or call 905-576-2567 x 5223.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

There is plenty of parking at 1600 Stellar Drive, Whitby. This is the northeast corner of Thickson and Stellar (formerly Champlain), with entry door beside Pita Deli.

Who should attend?

This is an excellent interactive simulation and learning opportunity for family and friends of someone living with dementia, service or care providers, health care or social service students; in short anyone interested in developing a greater understanding of the cognitive, emotional and behavioural changes associated with dementia.
