You will learn how the script type of Chinese calligraphy evolved and distinguish the five major types: Seal, Clerical, Running, Cursive and Standard through artworks by calligraphy masters. You will learn how to use the brush and draw the horizontal and vertical strokes. At the end of the class, you will pick a character and make your own calligraphy art on rice paper. This class is best for someone who has no experience with calligraphy.
Xirui “Raya” Xu began to learn calligraphy in the summer of 2014 and has spent hundreds of hours studying since then. Both of her teachers graduated from the best college calligraphy programs in Beijing. She adopts succinct and flexible teaching approaches to help the students learn faster. She sees calligraphy as the dance of ink, and the learning an exciting journey of communicating with the past.
Xirui studied Fashion Design in Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology and she is a first year grad student in the Criticism and Curatorial Practice program at OCAD University. Through her art journey from fashion school to art school, from Beijing to Toronto, she learned fashion illustration, oil painting, calligraphy, figurative drawing, art history and museology.
