Submissions of poetry, short fiction or hybrids thereof for the tenth annual John Lent Poetry/Prose Award

About this event

Kalamalka Press seeks chapbook-length collections of poetry, short fiction or hybrids thereof for its tenth annual John Lent Poetry/Prose Award!

Entrants should be in the early stages their writing careers, having not published more than two full-length books. The winning work will be published in a limited edition by Kalamalka Press, designed by Jason Dewinetz and printed by Writing & Publishing students in The Bunker, Okanagan College's Letterpress Print Shop.

GUIDELINES

The winning books are produced by hand, with the text hand-set in metal type, and thus we are limited to both the typefaces and the amount of type we have in the Bunker print shop. As such, submitted manuscripts must conform to the submission guidelines.

• Manuscripts must have a title.

• Manuscripts must be double-spaced in 12-point type.

• Word count is a very strict maximum of 4000 characters including spaces (this is around 750 words); any manuscript exceeding this limit will be not be considered.

• The competition is open to all forms of poetry and prose, or any combination of the two, however, given that these books are hand-set with metal type, be aware that we do NOT have special characters (@, #, *, %, etc.), accents or bold.

• Include your name, address, email address, and the title of the submission on a cover page (the first page); your name should not appear on the pages of the manuscript itself, but include a header that shows the manuscript title and page numbers.

• Excerpts from the manuscript may be previously published in journals and anthologies, but should not yet have appeared in a trade collection.
