Board members of non-profit organizations and charities are right to be concerned about their personal liability, and need to understand the risks involved in volunteering on a board of directors and how to protect themselves.
At the end of this session, you will be able to:
• Describe the legal structure of your organization and its constitutional documents.
• Identify and describe practices to limit liability.
• Identify and describe the legal duties of the board and of individual directors.
Facilitator: Michael Adams is an associate in the Corporate/Commercial and Real Estate groups at Viner, Kennedy LLP in Kingston, ON. Formerly a Crown attorney and clerk of the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan, he now specializes in real estate and commercial transactions. Michael holds a law degree from the University of Saskatchewan and began practicing in Ontario after obtaining a Master of Laws from Queen’s University in 2018-2019.

United Way strengthens the voluntary sector by providing training and workshops to local volunteers and boards of directors. Our volunteer Leadership Development Services program provides workshops and custom training sessions to nonprofit organizations throughout Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington.
Cancellation Policy
If you are unable to attend a workshop for which you have registered, you may designate a substitute to take your place. If no one from your organization is available, a full refund or credit can be provided if advance notice of five (5) business days is given to United Way.
