About this event

  • 2 hours

Great composers invite you to 'see' with your ears - and your heart.

It was in an effort to describe a visit to Fingal’s Cave to his sister that Felix Mendelssohn sketched a twenty-one measure theme, which later became the Hebrides Overture.

Brahms, too, was a master of music as a postcard, evoking the mood and 'colours' of a place with sound.

Talented 8 year old Jonah Gallas won the Music for Young Children competition by portraying "Lightning" in sound.

Our principal oboe Cris Sewerin and principal trumpet Sam Cancellara will paint Copland’s musical picture of the "Quiet City".

And, as much as Europe’s first female cathedral organist loved that instrument, Elfreida Andree went to the broader colour pallet of the full symphony orchestra for her masterful Overture in G.

Come join us for this evocative concert that will open your ears to the sights all around you.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear?

Whatever makes you comfortable - we're just glad you're here! (Not helpful? OK - well, we see mostly business casual... some jeans and t-shirts..and some who like the chance to dress up a bit. But really we do just want to play for you no matter what you're wearing)

My ticket has no row/seat?

You may sit wherever you like - first come, first choice.

When do I clap?

Tradition says to clap at the end of a piece, not between movements (sections), but these days audiences may spontaneously clap after a movement. If you're unsure, just wait for others to start.

I've seen other music peformed live - how is this different ?

To get the most out of a live, full orchestra performance you want to immerse yourself and listen attentively. Unplug your devices and plug into your soul. (Yes, it's that powerful! That's why a lot of what we play has been around for hundreds of years)

Is there free parking?

Yes. The high school parking lot and there is free street parking in the neighbourhood.

Are there refrehsments?

Yes. At intermission we offer coffee, water and buns.
