Event description

Description

The Federation of Canadian Asian Lawyers (“FACL”) joins forces with WELL in an informal, candid and open dialogue about identifying and addressing the challenges that arise from being a lawyer or law student from an equity-seeking group – in particular, women and racialized individuals. We will discuss the challenges faced by our participants at various times throughout their legal careers, including:

* at the entry level, e.g., how to assess whether a legal career is right for you

* at the retention level, e.g., how to discover who you are as a lawyer; what your boundaries are; what your sources of strength and support are

* at the competency level, e.g., how to build credibility with opposing counsel and the Court; how to deal with the absurd situations that arise; how to ensure your voice is heard

* at the career development level, e.g., how to say no; how to know and communicate your worth; how to work with managers and co-counsel

The panel, moderated by Mabel Lai (crown counsel and member of Board of Directors at FACL), will include: Justice Feroza Bhabha (OCJ) and Justice Mavin Wong (OCJ) and Jenny Kim (defence counsel), Sofina James (crown counsel on secondment at the Ontario Securities Commission), Susannah Chung-Alvares (defence counsel) and Sumrana Taher (duty counsel).
