About this event

Join us for an intimate evening with fellow readers. The theme of our books will vary by month, always with a mind to forwarding uncommon international works that will nourish and enrich our understanding of the world and each other.

DATE CHANGE: On Saturday, April 27th we will gather to discuss The Inhumans and Other Stories: A Selection of Bengali Science Fiction, edited and translated by Bodhisattva Chattopadhyay. From MIT Press:

The first English translation of a cult science fiction favorite by Hemendra Kumar Roy, one of the giants of early Bangla literature, and other sf stories from the colonial period in India.

Kalpavigyan—science fiction written to excite Bengali speakers about science, as well as to persuade them to evolve beyond the limitations of religion, caste, and class—became popular in the early years of the twentieth century. Translated into English for the first time, in this collection you'll discover The Inhumans (1935), Hemendrakumar Roy's satirical novella about a lost race of Bengali supermen in Uganda. Also included are Jagadananda Ray's “Voyage to Venus” (1895), Nanigopal Majumdar's “The Mystery of the Giant” (1931), and Manoranjan Bhattacharya's “The Martian Purana” (1931).

Our book club costs $5 + fees. Come prepared to engage in lively intellectual discussions, exchange recommendations, and meet fellow booklovers. Let's dive deep into the world of hidden and international literary gems together. See you there!

Frequently asked questions

What is your refund policy?

You can get a refund up to 7 days before the event! Eventbrite's fee is non-refundable.

Can I bring a friend?

Because space is limited, we cannot accommodate unregistered guests. Each ticket = entry for one person.

Will there be food or drinks?

We always have two pots of non-caffeinated tea. Participants are welcome to bring their own beverages or snacks for themselves or to share.

Do I have to purchase the book from Nooroongji Books?

Not at all! But if you purchase our next month's book club pick at our book club meeting, you will receive a 10% discount on that title at checkout.

Does it count if I listened to the book on audio or read it in a different language?

Absolutely. You are most welcome to join us.

Can I come even if I haven't read the book?

We've found our discussions most enriching when everyone has read or at least made some progress on the books we read. Please consider checking out the Nooroongji Social Club instead!

Is there an age limit?

Not firmly, but recommended for adults. Follow us for future events open to children and teens!

I want to save my spot for future months—can I know what books we'll be reading in advance?

Hang tight! We will announce the following month's book after each meeting.
