Event description

Description

It has been a year since BC declared a public health emergency due to the number of people dying from accidental overdoses. More than 2000 people have died in BC since January 1st 2016, over 300 of them on Vancouver Island. Despite best efforts on the part of many, the overdose crisis continues and on Vancouver Island deaths by overdose have increased in 2017.

AVI and KDC invite community members to come together to learn, hear, and honour the work being done to support and care for our communities. This will allow community members to look at some short and longer term strategies that best meet the needs of people who use illicit drugs. We will work to build on the existing strengths and develop actions that are needed to meet the challenge of the overdose crisis. The community also has an ongoing role to play especially those who have been more impacted by the crisis, people who use illicit drugs and their families.

DAYTIME SYMPOSIUM, 10:00am-4:00pm (lunch provided)
This event will include presentations and small group discussions on the following:

  • the role of stigma

  • the last year in review

  • policies and practices that help or hinder overdose prevention and response

  • evidence based interventions on problematic substance use including treatment and Opioid Substitution Therapy, and prescription heroin

  • Perspectives of people at risk of overdose and their families

  • How Indigenous communities can respond to overdose prevention and response

  • Current research on creating supportive environments for people who use illicit drugs

  • Facilitated small groups to determine the successes we have had and the areas that need to be addressed.

The daytime symposium will conclude with a healing and cleansing ceremony for participants, presenters and honored guests.

COMMUNITY DINNER AND GUEST SPEAKER, 5:00pm-7:00pm (dinner provided)

In the evening, we welcome the community to share a dinner while listening to a guest speaker and furthering the dialogue and community learning about preventing overdose and building resilience.

We welcome any suggestions for further topics to explore at the symposium, as we would like this event to be as community-driven as possible.
