About this event

    Please note that this event will be recorded and available on the CHI YouTube channel.

    CHI's Lunchtime Learning is open to all researchers, decision-makers, clinicians, patients and members of the public who want to learn more about the theory and practice of meaningful, inclusive, and safe patient and public engagement.

    Learning Objectives

    This is an introduction session that aims to enhance researchers, clinicians, and students’ knowledge around cultural safer ways of engaging with folks in health research.

    By the end of this session, attendees should be able to:

    • have a base understanding around general definitions— cultural awareness; cultural sensitivity, cultural competency, cultural humility, and cultural safety;
    • have a deeper understanding of culture and its context through real-life examples;
    • expand your awareness of the importance of creating safer spaces built on mutual respect, shared understanding, and valuing our differences.

    Discussion Lead

    Ogai Sherzoi (MSW, BH ecol.; she/her) is a Knowledge Broker at the Centre for Healthcare Innovation. In this role she works closely with folks with lived/living experiences and community members; clinicians and health researchers. She provides supports in the areas of trauma-informed and cross-cultural facilitation; development of patient and public engagement strategies and participatory approaches. Ogai has over 17 years of experience working in the social services field across diverse communities and settings. Ogai is a big proponent of using social justice, anti-oppressive, intersectional and health equity lens within her work. Ogai deeply values the strengths and resiliency of individuals and communities. She believes in the importance of building trust through relationships.

    Thomas Beaudry is a proud Indigenous man; a proud father of three (two young men and a young woman); and a mishoom of two boys. He is a graduate of the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER), with a certificate in Environmental Protection, focused on environmental-related issues concerning Indigenous peoples and communities. Thomas is currently employed with the Province of Manitoba’s Department of Sustainable Development as an Engagement and Reconciliation Community Coordinator. His goal is collaboration between environmental and healthcare fields by acting as a “bridge”, a facilitator in these fields, and with Indigenous people, in order to assist in creating a way for healthy people and communities.

    Hani Ataan Al-Ubeady is a Cross-Cultural Mental Health Specialist with WRHA. Registered Family Therapist & Canadian Certified Counsellor, Cultural Consultant, and Community-based Research Director. Hani has contributed tremendously to our society for more than 23 years of community activism. Co-founder of the Ethno-cultural Council of MB, and regulated Immigration Consultant. His goal is to remove barriers on the path of creating a welcoming and healthy community for all, and deconstruct negative mental health myths and stigmatizing narratives around newcomers and all other marginalized groups in our society. For decades, Hani has been working tirelessly to build healthy and positive relationships among Indigenous, newcomer and the rest of the society.

    The 2023-2024 Patient Engagement Lunchtime Learning Series
