PHO Webinar: Resident and Family-Centred IPAC Principles: Hospice Setting

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the integral role of infection prevention and control (IPAC) in the provision of care across all health care settings, including residential hospice settings. These facilities provide respectful compassionate care. At times, applying IPAC principles and best practices in an effective way may feel challenging in these environments. This session will discuss how IPAC principles can be applied to maintain the focus of care on the resident and their families and friends, while embracing the unique care environment within hospice settings.

Intended audience: Hospice Administrators and Staff, IPAC Professionals, Public Health Professionals.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Describe four key IPAC measures essential for the direct care environment in hospice settings.
• Discuss how policy development, education and training can support the implementation of IPAC measures.
• Examine how the built environment/infrastructure may support or hinder IPAC measures.

About the presenters: Anne Augustin and Jeya Nadarajah

Anne Augustin MLT, CIC, is a medical laboratory technologist; she obtained and has held her C.I.C. ® designation from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology since 1991. Anne has significant experience working as an Infection Prevention & Control professional in a variety of health care settings which include long term care, tertiary health care, rural acute care and public health. At Public Health Ontario, Anne is the Acting Manager of Health Systems Guidance. She’s active within IPAC Canada as a member of IPAC Canada’s Standards and Guidelines Committee, Long-term Care Interest Group and the Reprocessing Interest Group.

Jeya Nadarajah MD, MSc, FRCPC, is an Infectious Diseases Physician and Medical Microbiologist. At Public Health Ontario, she is a co-lead of the Health Systems Guidance stream of the COVID-19 IMS and an IPAC Physician within Health Protection. She is also the Medical Director of IPAC and the Microbiology Laboratory at Oak Valley Health.
