Queen Araweelo- Break The Silence: Addressing Gender Based Violence
Event Information
About this event
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has exasperated this issue, which is already impacting so many people. This is a topic not often discussed within the Somali community; it is perpetuated by shame culture and the fallacy of protecting one’s familial reputation.
Workshop Facilitator: Marian Nur (she/her) is a first-generation Somali born and raised in what is now called Ottawa, which is unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe territory. She attended the University of Ottawa and was an active member of the BSLA and the MSA. She worked in the public sector as a policy analyst while still being an active member of her community through volunteering and other capacities. Marian has since transitioned to the non-profit sector, working as an equity coordinator for a feminist non-profit to create more accessibility in political engagement for womxn and gender non-conforming folks. In her most recent position, she is working as a campaigns officer focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights. Marian was a co-organizer for Canada's first state of Sex-Ed conference in October 2020. This convening of leaders and sex-ed champions representing diverse sectors to take stock of the current state of sex-ed and chart a path of collective action to secure better access. Marian has worked with the YWCA in creating content addressing the experiences of racialized folks. She has been a keynote speaker at the University of Washington and Concordia Universities Simone de Beauvoir institute on the need for comprehensive sex-ed, desirability politics and the impacts of policing. Marian's passions lie at the intersection of race and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights. In her free time, you can usually find Marian eating Brunch, riding her bike or expressing her love of Matcha. You can follow her on Twitter @MarianNur_
