FIGURE OUT YOUR DANCE

Universe unifies!

Experience the essence of dance — independently — with Ian Mozdzen at Edmonton’s Mile Zero Dance on March 3rd, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Delve into the intricate relationship between movement, the human figure, and the total canvas of reality in this unique workshop experience.

Throughout the session, participants will engage in timed, video-recorded examinations of the figure, ranging from brief 30-second sketches to longer, more multi-faceted compositions.

These timed studies will allow dancers to explore the art of figurative expression, attuning to energies of proximity, duration, radiance and form. Encounter a direct and nonchoreographic approach that reveals the work of art you already are AND Experience a singular evolution of your dance as we transcend traditional choreography.

Under Ian’s guidance, with over 20 years of stage practice, participants will cultivate a figurative modality that breathes life into the sculptural form, animating it with various graces.

Please attend with water/snacks and attire that reflects your personal style and dance practice.

Join SCHOOL OF NATURAL DANCERS for a transformative glimpse into the heart of dance, where the human figure naturally becomes a canvas for boundless expression.

Participants will receive comprehensive video documentation of their journey, empowering them to further study and refine their movements. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to elevate your dance practice and immerse yourself in the artistry of the human figure.

Since 2021, Ian has independently launched numerous instant dance initiatives which have seen an array of partnerships and collaborations. Attracting dancers of all experience levels, Ian has presented/performed a PEOPLE dance series, a 3-day independent dance festival, an indoor/outdoor dance series, a dance lab trilogy, a year-long monthly new dance series, an ongoing draw + dance happening at Winnipeg’s aceartinc. gallery, as well as many single-engagement dance works.

Encouraged by the community, Ian launched an INSTANT DANCE WORKSHOP early 2023 and then formalized the practice as SCHOOL OF NATURAL DANCERS, wherein YOU ARE ALREADY A WORK OF ART.

EXFORTIS II: NATURE ABHORS A VACUUM DEMO

Join us on February 14th at 7 pm at Crescent Arts Centre for an extraordinary event – "EXFORTIS II: Nature Abhors a Vacuum." The School of Natural Dancers presents a captivating fusion of dance and vacuuming, exploring Aristotle's timeless saying. Experience the synergy of movement and household chores, showcasing our commitment to independent dance in Winnipeg. Don't miss this unique opportunity – a demonstration that defies choreography and celebrates the art of spontaneity.

Admission by donation.

Be part of a one-of-a-kind performance that challenges boundaries.

See you there!

"Nature abhors a vacuum" is a philosophical concept by Aristotle, suggesting that empty spaces are unnatural and should be filled. In the context of dance and movement, it symbolizes the rejection of stillness or emptiness in artistic expression. The School of Natural Dancers takes this idea and translates it into a dynamic performance, where the combination of dance and vacuuming becomes a metaphor for the constant flow and energy in life. The movement fills the space, embracing the philosophy of rejecting emptiness, creating a visually compelling exploration of Aristotle's timeless concept.

**The Concept**: EXFORTIS emerges from a unique discovery within the SCHOOL OF NATURAL DANCERS. It all began during a dance practice when a dancer's shoes left unexpected, dramatic markings on the floor. This accident has become the centrepiece of our exploration, leading us away from conventional art and into the realm of non-art. Here, dance transcends itself, becoming even more ephemeral than it already is.

**Cleansing as an Act of Significance **: EXFORTIS centers around the deliberate act of cleaning the floor. Witness the dancer's dedication as they spend hours removing these accidental marks, symbolizing/enacting gestures of obligatory cleansing, personal redemption and cosmic transformation. The room's historic presence adds an ambient dimension, enhancing the contemplative experience.

**Interactive and Transformative**: EXFORTIS is an interactive event where you can witness transformation firsthand, even walk around the dancer as they scrub on the floor. The dancer's dedication and cleansing effort focuses presence to creates a powerfully immersive experience that promises to linger long after the performance ends.

**The SCHOOL OF NATURAL DANCERS**: Our unique dance school is dedicated to nurturing the natural dance artist in each of us. We believe everyone possesses a beautiful dance waiting to be expressed. Our inclusive practice platform welcomes dancers of all abilities to develop their artistry and showcase their unique dance forms. Inquire for further details.

**Join Us**: Don't miss this extraordinary event where accidental floor markings become the catalyst for a journey of cleansing, redemption and transformation. Come to witness, contemplate and be moved by EXFORTIS.
