Try a meteorite-infused beer and hear from local experts about meteorites and the moons of the solar system!
About this event
Looking for an out of this world experience? Join this special beer launch event to try a meteorite-infused blackberry lager from Wellington Brewery and learn all about space!
Hear from a planetary scientist about meteorites -- including the ones in our beer! -- and learn from a space science educator about the many moons of our solar system. All in support of Royal City Science, a group working to establish a science centre here in Guelph.
About the event:
DO look up! Meteorites: what are they and how to find them with Glynis Perrett, planetary scientist and teacher.
Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a meteorite, meteor, and meteoroid? Do you wonder how we actually know what the solar system was made of in its early days? Are you curious about the actual meteorites that are in the beer we've cooked up? In this talk Dr. Glynis Perrett will introduce you to all things meteorites. What are they? Where do they come from? How can you identify one (and what should you do if you actually find one!)? Why do we care about them? And what can they tell us about our little corner of the universe?
Next up: Moons madness with Kate Howells, space advocate and public educator.
At some point in elementary school, everyone has to learn the names of the planets. For most people, that’s where it ends. But almost every planet in our solar system has at least one moon in orbit around it, and these little worlds are as extraordinary and cool as the planets themselves, if not cooler. Kate will introduce people to the mind-boggling moons of our solar system, from the volcanic hellscape of Io to the ice mountains and methane seas of Titan and beyond. Plus, we’ll take a closer look at Earth’s moon and forever change your perception of our little cosmic companion.
About the beer:
Dark Matter Quantum Lager with Blackberry & Meteorites
Every second, you experience approximately 2.5 × 10^-16 kilograms of dark matter passing through your body -- until you crack a can of Dark Matter Quantum Lager and blast your senses with 0.473 kilos of stellar goodness!
Of course we used Comet and Galaxy hops in this refreshingly crisp lager, to give the beer a zesty grapefruit and tangerine boost, complimented by a subtle hint of balanced blackberry tart and sweetness. This brew pours a straw-gold with an elusive touch of purple, and if you're lucky, you'll receive a random can with food-grade glitter for the ultimate cosmic pour! *Notify us with a picture to win a prize.* With the addition of Gibeon Meteorites in the boil, this beer will teleport you to new and distant realms- sparking geomagnetic storms, igniting bright polar auroras and showering your tastebuds with meteorite flavour!
Fifty cents from each can is donated to Royal City Science, with a vision of opening up a science centre right here in Guelph that will serve as a hub for informal science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to ignite curiosity, build confidence, and inspire the inner scientist in us all.
