How can a network of women in STEM bring both partners together?
Dr.-Ing. Sigrid Hegels is a mechanical engineer, who is supporting a group of Women in
Engineering in Aachen, a town in the western part of Germany with a well distinguished
Technical University. About 5000 engineers and natural scientists are leaving the university
with a Bachelor, Master or Ph.D. degree every year.
Nevertheless, especially smaller companies in the region have problems to recruit enough
engineers or natural scientist. On the other hand, many female STEM graduates have a hard
time finding an interesting job after graduation or i.e. after a break in their career.
The VDI (Association of German Engineers) Network of Women in Engineering started a
project to bring young and experienced women together with local employers and not-for-
profit organizations. Different regional events, where firms present themselves and the
opportunities they can offer for university students and female STEM candidates were
Sigrid will give a summary about her career path including her experiences in recruitment
from the point of view as an employee and an employer to start the discussion with all
participants of the October Pub Night.
