Self-Care Practices for Stress and Anxiety: Your Breath, the Nervous System, and Building Resiliency Through Yoga

the Take Care Club

We all experience various degrees and frequencies of stress throughout life and it is said that 1 in 13 people worldwide currently experience anxiety. While stress and anxiety are considered two separate experiences, they can both have very similar physical, mental. emotional, spiritual, and social impacts on our bodies, minds, and relationships. Self-care is the cornerstone for developing awareness, acceptance, love, and ultimately resiliency in regards to how we work with stress and anxiety throughout life. The practice of yoga is rich with tools for building this resiliency and deepening our relationships with ourselves.

In this two-hour workshop we will explore the following:

  • What resiliency is and why it’s so important

  • An introduction to how the nervous system works and its relationship to stress and anxiety

  • Your connection to your breath - the life force. Simple pranayama (breathwork) techniques to implement in your day to day life to help you feel connected, grounded, and calm

  • A gentle all-levels yoga practice designed specifically for managing stress and anxiety

  • A calming and grounding guided meditation. You will also receive a recorded version of this meditation to use at home

  • Self-love focused guided journaling for your own personal contemplation

  • Snacks and tea provided

A note from the facilitator:

It’s important to note that I am not a mental health care professional. I have, however, experienced lots of stress throughout life, and also chronic daily anxiety for many years. Developing my personal yoga practice and becoming a teacher has given me so many tools to help demystify my previous struggles with anxiety, and has allowed me to grow more resilient than ever! It is my intention with this specific workshop to share with you the practices that have allowed me to thrive in the hopes that they will resonate with you as well.

ABOUT THE TAKE CARE CLUB:

Modern life can be stressful and we all need reminders and techniques to foster deeper connections with ourselves and our world - to expand our resilience and live our most vibrant lives. The Take Care Club is formed from a deep desire to take care of ourselves and each other; to hold space for our souls’ callings and develop nurturing practices of self-love.

The Take Care Club is a 2 hour workshop-style gathering held once monthly that focuses on practices of self-care through the lens of yoga. Each month, the TCC is centered around a different theme relating to self-care, and we will explore a variety of practices relating to that theme. You can expect movement practices suitable for all levels, discussion, mindfulness exercises, guided journaling, breathing exercises, community, and more. Each month you will also receive a take-home package for your own home practice.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:

Katie's approach to teaching stems from a combination of sharing from personal experience and her studies as a passionate practitioner of yoga. Having experienced anxiety for many years, Katie knows firsthand the healing and transformative power of yoga. It is her intention to hold space for others on their own paths of exploration through the development of sustainable yoga practices, with a strong focus on self-love and resiliency. Katie teaches Hatha/Vinyasa yoga with an emphasis on alignment, breath, movement, and wholehearted connection. To her, connection - with ourselves, each other, and our world - is truly the heart of it all.

Katie Blecker is a CYA-RYT 500 and she received her yoga training with the Vancouver School of Healing Arts.
