About this event

Through March and April 2023, we are hosting virtual and in-person faculty, research faculty, staff and Indigenous community dialogues to build internal collaboration and help shape planning decisions for the future medical school.

Building upon feedback received in previous phases of engagement, SFU's Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic would like to give a chance for SFU faculty, students and staff to get updates, provide feedback and explore how they can benefit from, be involved with or partner with the new medical school.

Join us in person at the Surrey campus for a two-way dialogue session on space, infrastructure and community involvement. This event will focus on how we can integrate the school into our Surrey campus, connect with our many local communities and build a sense of pride along the path to opening in 2026. All SFU students, staff and faculty are welcome.

Hosts include:

  • Stephen Dooley, Executive Director, SFU Surrey campus
  • Kris Magnusson, Chair, Workforce Working Group for the SFU Medical School and Senior Advisor to the Provost
  • Roger Strasser, Interim Dean, SFU Medical School

The session will be divided into three main parts:

Introduction and overview: The Who, What, Where, When, Why and How. SFU Representatives will share updates and next steps for planning the SFU Medical School.

Questions and answers: Participants will have a chance to ask any medical program-related questions.

Small breakout groups: To hear from you directly, participants will be divided into small groups to provide ideas and feedback on some key questions. Your input will help inform future planning and guide subsequent engagement.

Some of the guiding questions you can expect to explore include:

  • What would make you feel proud to have the SFU Medical School as part of the Surrey campus? How can the school contribute to the ‘Surrey campus vibe’?
  • What are your concerns regarding space and infrastructure when the SFU Medical School joins the Surrey Campus? What benefits can the school offer in relation to space and infrastructure of the Surrey campus?
  • In what ways can the SFU Medical School add value to your group, department, or faculty? What do you see as some of the possible challenges?
  • How might we successfully engage with the external Surrey community to deepen the sense of connection to the medical school?

Additional information about the SFU Medical School:

The provincial government is enhancing primary care and access to family doctors across British Columbia. Part of this work includes the creation of a medical school at SFU to educate more doctors to serve underserved populations and to improve care.

Medical school curriculum will be built on the following pillars:

  • Prepare graduates to meet the prevention and primary care needs of diverse communities and populations across B.C.
  • Educate physicians to work in team-based primary care settings that are patient-centered and socially accountable.
  • Commit to reciprocal community partnerships in the development and implementation of the medical school.
  • Embed and equalize Indigenous knowledge systems.
  • Provide community-based learning opportunities.

Now that the provincial government has confirmed that planning for the medical school can proceed, SFU is excited to be working with the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, the Ministry of Health, the University of British Columbia and the health authorities across the province, as part of the long-term solution to improve primary care for British Columbians.

Thank you for your participation!

We look forward to meeting you and hearing your insights and ideas.
