Alberta’s Legal System for Newcomers

In this presentation, Professor Zaidi provides an overview of the Canadian legal system, including historical sources of law, the constitution (including the Charter of Rights and Freedoms), administrative law, division of powers between federal and provincial governments, Canada’s and Alberta’s court systems, municipal governments, and judicial decisions. The presentation will include discussion of issues faced by newcomers to Alberta; migration statistics, stakeholder in Alberta’s legal profession; how newcomers affect Alberta’s legal system; and how newcomers impact the legal profession in Alberta.

Kamaal Zaidi is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary. He currently teaches administrative law, immigration and refugee law, contracts, civil procedure, and criminal law and procedure. He has published two books including How England Shaped Today’s Common Law (2016). His current research focuses on immigration and climate change, contracts, and administrative law. A question-and-answer period will be held after the presentation. Coffee and tea will be served.
