THE REAL THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF EXTERIOR WALL ASSEMBLIES

The thermal performance of building enclosures has always been a primary focus for building designers and owners. Today’s requirements in applicable codes do not specify which type of thermal insulation should be used; rather, they indicate minimum performance requirements based on “effective R-values” or “U-values”.

The designer’s selection of insulation materials for exterior wall assemblies is a critical step in ensuring the adequate thermal performance of buildings. Different insulation types may be used, but even more importantly, the choice of cladding and its attachment method will have a significant impact on thermal bridging and overall thermal performance.

A combination of thermal insulation types can be a smart option to provide increased thermal performance while maintaining ease of installation and reasonable cost.

PERFORMANCE OF ROOF INSULATION—INFLUENCE OF DIMENSIONAL STABILITY

All materials have a coefficient of thermal expansion that dictates how much they will expand and contract when the temperature changes. Materials can be tested for dimensional stability, which will indicate the level of permanent deformation they will exhibit after exposure to extreme temperatures. This presentation will review the behaviour of roof insulation when exposed to thermal cycles in conventional roof assemblies.

If poor dimensional stability causes insulation boards to shrink, gaps will be created. What is the impact of these gaps on the thermal performance of the roof? This instability is often transferred to the roof membrane assembly. Will this affect the durability and integrity of the roofing system?

The impact of the type of insulation, membrane, and protection board—as well as their attachment methods—was investigated by exposing roofing system mockups to temperature cycles in a climate chamber. These tests could replicate roof system creasing and ridging as observed in the field. Hypotheses regarding the causes of these issues will be discussed.
