Title: Walking Together: A Relational Practice of Moving With Toddlers

Presenters: Emily Kapahi, Melanie Jang, and Roselyn Gutierrez

This presentation by Frog Hollow Village Toddler's Team was so welcomed at our Winter 2024 Conference, we wanted to share it with more educators out there!

About the Project:

Join The Village Toddler Educators in re-imagining walking as a pedagogical practice. By deconstructing the idea of walking, the educators provoke a relational and collaborative practice that enables the youngest citizens to take space in their community, explore their neighbourhood, and make new meanings of the world around them. In this 2nd part of their presentation, Em, Melanie, and Roselyn invite educators to come with questions, challenges, and hopes for how walking can be re-imagined in their own space and practice.

About Presenters:

Em (they/she) has been in the field of Early Childhood Education for the past 11 years. Em was raised on the traditional, unceded and occupied territories of the Musqueam Nation. They graduated from Langara College with their ECE Diploma, SN & IT Certifications, and Expressive Arts Therapy Certification. Before joining the Toddler Team at the Village in 2022 they worked at a variety of centers across the Lower Mainland. After experiencing many different approaches and styles of care with young children, the idea they resonated most with is that all children are capable of much more than we give them credit for, if we genuinely listen to children they have amazing insights to offer.

Melanie Jang (she/her) has her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Care and Education from Capilano University. She is an infant/toddler early childhood educator at Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House. Her work is postured in the unravellings of possibilities and potentialities of alternative narratives in ECE. Melanie moves towards re-imagining and co-creating a well lived world, together with young children, families, and educators alike.

Roselyn Gutierrez (she/her) has a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Care and Education from Capilano University. She currently works as an infant/toddler early childhood educator, mentor, and facilitator at Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House.

Her practice is guided by the idea that there is an alternative narrative for early childhood education. She is committed to unpacking and reconceptualizing dominant discourses in early childhood education in hopes of aspiring to provide democratic spaces for our youngest citizens.
