Don’t Just Rest on Your Laurels,
Revel in Them!
In business networking circles, often we’re asked questions like:
“What are your goals for the next quarter?”
“Where do you see yourself a year from now?”
“What is your five-year plan?”
The emphasis is always on future intentions, all the various objectives you have not yet accomplished.In fact, saturated as we are with this relentless go-getter mindset, once we have reached a desired target, it never seems as sweet a victory as we’d imagined because there’s still so much more out there to conquer. It feels somehow premature to get excited about achieving your goal because someone’s seemingly moved the goalpost a little further away and there’s still way more work to do. Is this the way you want to live life?
Heaven forbid we should “rest on our laurels,” a phrase originating in ancient Greece where winning athletes were awarded laurel wreaths as a sign of extraordinary accomplishment. The Romans presented laurel wreaths to victorious military officials. Interestingly enough, at the time, there was no negative implication that resting on your laurels signified laziness or complacency as it does today. The laurel recipients could spend the rest of their days revelling in their past glories. They’d earned that right.
That makes sense to me especially if you consider the words of author Greg Anderson,“Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.”
If we are pushing ourselves harder to achieve more even faster, then our journey is only an ongoing joyless trek devoid of any appreciation of the rewards that come with our accomplishments. There will always be more to achieve but where’s the joy in it if we’re always focusing on the distance we still have to cover?
