About the Award

The TaxFighter Award is given out by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) to recognize Canadians who have made an outstanding contribution to the cause of taxpayer emancipation. This award has been given to lawmakers, media personalities, academics and average citizens who have stood out and stood up in fighting for limited and accountable government.

About the Recipient

Bruce Hallsor is the Managing Partner at British Columbia’s oldest law firm. He has won the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals for community service, as well as the Medal of Merit and Bar to the Medal of Merit from Scouts Canada. He was awarded a Queen’s Counsel designation in 2016.

Over the years, Bruce has, on a pro bono or reduced fee basis, represented dozens of advocacy groups and sometimes political parties and candidates who support free enterprise, democracy, and taxpayer rights. Principal among these is the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, who he has been providing legal advice and advocacy for since 1995.

Through his work, Bruce has become a leading expert in Canada on electoral law and electoral processes, and has also developed expertise in constitutional law and charter issues particularly centred on free speech.

Bruce’s contributions have gone well beyond legal practice, into volunteer positions, some of which include:

-President of the Victoria Bar Association

-National President of the Estates and Trust section of the Canadian Bar Association

-Director of the Canadian Property Tax Association

-Chair of the Board of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms

-Chief Electoral Officer for Scouts Canada

-President of Fair Voting BC

-Vice President of Fair Vote Canada

-Chair of the Victoria Board of Variance

-Chair of the Royal British Columbia Museum Foundation

-Chair of the Victoria Open Golf Society

-Advisory Board of the Make a Wish Foundation

-Advisory Board of the Salvation Army

-President of the Workstreams Employment Society

Prior to obtaining a law degree, Bruce was the President of the BC Young Socreds and a member of the Social Credit Provincial Council. He also served as a ministerial assistant to the Ministers of Forests, Labour, and as a special assistant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs. Bruce has served as the chair of the rules committee for the Conservative Party of Canada’s 2022 leadership race, and has also been a parliamentarian at past CPC conventions, as well as BC campaign Chair in 2006.
