About this event

Caregivers Alberta is partnering with Young Caregivers Association to offer another exciting pilot program focused on helping young people build personal strength, positive self-esteem and well-being, and gaining insights into their unique role as a young caregiver. It will also provide opportunities to connect with other young adults who have similar experiences of supporting a family member.

Attend this Lunch 'n Learn to learn about who young caregivers are, the challenges they face, and hear about a 4-week in person program being offered in the Calgary region, for ages 18 to 25. We are working with other Calgary agencies such as Wellspring and Hospice Calgary to identify our young caregiver audience and welcome other agency's support in spreading the word!

Who are Young Caregivers?

Young caregivers are children, youth, and young adults ages 5 to 25 who provide care for a family member due to a chronic illness, disability, mental health concern or substance misuse. They may be caring for their siblings or providing personal, emotional, or financial support to a parent or grandparent. When compared to non-caregiving peers, research reveals that young caregivers are at a greater risk of stress and depressive symptoms, low self-esteem, high anxiety levels, loneliness and isolation, difficulty relating to peers, self-harm and even suicidal ideation.
