Description

Join Victim Services HPELA for a Lunch and Learn event with guest speaker Michelle Lewis:

29% of Ontarians are family caregivers supporting their loved one to stay in their home. Young carers are often overlooked – they are young children, youth or young adults who support or have other responsibilities helping a family member who has a health issue - like chronic disease, disability, mental health and/or addiction.
Globally, young carers are a hidden population who are rarely identified and supported in a systematic way. Within the global context, only one country, the United Kingdom, systematically identifies and supports young carers. In Canada, awareness is in the beginning stages, hence there are no current policies in place to support the recognition of their role. In 2004, a group of concerned community professionals in Southern Ontario identified a group of youth in caregiving roles who were in need of support. This was the first time that young carers were identified in Canada.

This presentation will examine the challenges with identifying young carers and will address the growth in awareness of young carers within Canada over the past 10 years. The first Canadian young carer support program, Powerhouse Project, will be discussed along with recommendations for enhanced identification, awareness and understanding within community-based settings.

About the Presenter:

Michelle Lewis serves as the Executive Director of the Young Carers Initiative – Powerhouse Project, a not-for-profit agency with a mission to serve caregiving children, youth, young adults and their families in the regions of Niagara and Haldimand-Norfolk. Michelle has been with the organization since 2012 with a focus on thinking strategically around barriers caregiving families experience. Having been a young carer herself, she uses her lived experience and passion to find ways to support as many young carers as possible. Michelle was raised in Hagersville and now lives in St. Catharines with her husband and two daughters and is grateful to work for an organization that serves her “two homes”.
