The Holly and the Ivy: Painting a medieval-style illumination to celebrate the Winter Solstice with Debbie Thompson Wilson at the Guelph Civic Museum

10:00 am - 4:00 pm (30 minute break hour for lunch – lunch is not supplied – BYO lunch)

$50.00 per person + HST – NO REFUNDS

Holly and ivy plants have been associated with the winter solstice since ancient times. We will be painting either a picture of a deer or of a bird with holly and ivy decoration, in miniature with 23 k. gold leaf accents.

Supplies to bring:

  • basic set of watercolours (either tubes or cakes)

  • a couple of fine watercolour brushes (size 0 or smaller)

  • an old fine brush you don't care about (to use with glue size, which wrecks brushes)

  • Faber Castell Pitt Artist pen in black, size XS (available from Wyndham Art Supply) or other fine liner pen (must be waterproof ink)

  • 4B, 5B or 6B pencil (whichever you have...you only need one of these)

  • kneadable eraser

  • sharp, clean scissors

  • x-acto knife with #11 blade ruler

  • water container

  • rag or paper towel

  • palette or china plate to mix colours on.

Also: Supplies provided by instructor (for a $10 supply fee – CASH ONLY – paid directly to Debbie Thompson-Wilson the day of the workshop):

  • one fine watercolour brush

  • 23k gold leaf and gilding glue,

  • watercolour paper

  • handouts and exemplars and misc. materials
