You will play explore and dive deep into the world of discovery using encaustic wax as your medium. This is a beginning journey into three dimensional encaustic forms! We are taking encaustic off the flat panel surface and diving in to exploring its dimensional possibilities! In this workshop you will learn a liberating process of:

- Texturing

- Layering

- Building up and scraping back

- You will explore mark-making techniques

- Wax applications

- Incising and inlaying

- Explore color and create depth through use of pigmented wax, pigment sticks and glazing techniques

- You will incorporate thread, tissue papers, metallic and gold leaf

Participants will go home with one original painting. All materials are included but you are encouraged to bring ephemera, and other materials you may want to incorporate into your piece.

What is included in this workshop

One 14x14 gallery wood panel, powertex universal medium, stone art clay, joint compound, easy 3D flex, encaustic medium, R&F oil sticks, pan pastels, iridescent powders, India ink, alcohol inks, specialty papers, string, threads, chalk paint, gold leaf, bronze leaf, sand, stencils, mark making tools, heat guns, all brushes, pallet knife and a chance to go through Amanda's treasure box and add unique finds to your piece!

What Is Encaustic?

Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” Heat is used throughout the process, from melting the natural beeswax and dammar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or used pigmented. Pigments may be added to the medium. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or any tool the artist wishes to create from. Each layer is then reheated to fuse it to the previous layer

About the Artist

Amanda Pierce

Amanda is an active published member of the International Encaustic Artists Association, a certified level 4 Powertex instructor and a member of the National Capital network of sculptors.

A native of Saskatchewan, Canada, Amanda Pierce  spent her childhood summers exploring and playing outside in nature.  With no television or phones to distract, her imagination introduced her to the world of art and her inherent ability to capture nature on canvas was born.  In the early years, this skill influenced by artists such as:  Charlene Stauffer and Betty Warnock.

Now residing in Ottawa, Canada, she has been mentored by phenomenal artists worldwide .  As an artist who thinks outside the box and believes we are all artists of the soul, Amanda has been honing and honoring her artistic gifts for over 20 years.   True to her Indigenous roots, Amanda derives her inspiration from nature.  Through encaustic and mixed mediums she captures the intensity, fluidity and texture of the natural world in her art.   This spontaneous medium where hot wax, resin and pigment meets wood panels, Amanda  intuitively manipulates color and texture to create luscious, magical works of art that allow the viewer to be lost in a meditative trance of infinite possibilities.
