Frontrunners Victoria is proud to announce that, as a part of Homelessness Action Week, they will be presenting a screening of the much buzzed about film, US AND THEM. This event will be co-sponsored by The Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC), and will include a discussion panel following the first screening.
US AND THEM, written and directed by Krista Loughton and Jennifer Abbott (The Corporation), is currently set to screen at several prominent events across Canada, including the Union of BC Municipalities Annual Conference where it will be shown to policy makers and other delegates of municipal governments, and on Parliament Hill during Ottawa’s annual Housing on the Hill event. This Frontrunners hosted screening will be the public’s opportunity to gain an empathetic look into the lives of individuals that they otherwise might not have had a chance to experience.
US AND THEM shatters misconceptions about why people end up on the streets through its compassionate narrative. Krista Loughton lends a familiarity to all that she interviews. Krista's subjects aren't "just homeless." They are not faceless apparitions wandering the streets. These people are the friends and family that we all know in our communities, who need our support.
Dr. Bernie Pauly, a CARBC Scientist, says “there is so much stigma surrounding substance use and homelessness. Films like US AND THEM provide us with an opportunity to break down the stigma that people face daily.” CARBC is pleased to be supporting this event as an opportunity to promote discussion and understanding of issues related to substance use, addictions, and homelessness.
A panel discussion will follow the 7pm show and will be moderated by Kathy Stinson of the Victoria Cool Aid Society. The topic is "How Can We Help the Chronically Homeless Recover From Deep Trauma?" The panelists are Bernie Pauly from the Centre for Addictions Research of BC, Bernice Kamano of the Aboriginal Collation to End Homelessness, and Us and Them filmmaker Krista Loughton.
