★VANESSA WINN is a highlyl-regarded tango dancer, teacher, and DJ. Vanessa will on occasion be my assistant for the tango portion of one of the classes this Winter session (subject to health, etc). Vanessa is one of my favourite tango dancers and teachers, and it's an honour —and a huge learning opportunity— to have her here with us when she is available. If you're in Victoria and want to arrange a private lesson with Vanessa LMK and I'll pass on your telephone number.

WHAT IS IT?

A weekly series of "mini-workshops" designed for enhanced creativity and connection for couples, using the modalities of posture, breath, sound (yoga), and movement (tango). Rather than relying on verbal and brain-based strategies to find joy with each other, we'll draw on the knowledge of our bodies and create an art that is personal to you as a couple.

Tango is often portrayed as a (complicated) dance of over-the-top passion and technicality. The stage version of tango certainly caters to this image. As a social dance, however, tango is much more pedestrian. It is about holding each other. Walking with each other. Finding how we fit as either lead or follow, and creating something meaningful in the few minutes we have together.

It is my experience, as a dancer, a student of sacred sexuality and the yoga of authentic relationships, and as a teacher that Argentine tango is THE perfect opportunity for couples to experience and play with this thing call "polarity." In this short tango class we will focus on connection through postures, breathwork, and movement. We'll play with the very basic steps. And in 45 minutes you will deepen connection with your romantic partner.

In these mini-workshops we start with a short, deep yoga session focusing on postures, breathwork, and meditations to help you deepen intimacy, spiritual connection, and physical connection with your romantic or practice partner. Importantly, this yoga practice will open you up to learn more about your art of tango.

Over the series we'll build on this connection to build a core competency that will allow you to dance tango with anyone.

We will be using techniques often associated with Kundalini Yoga and Tantra. If you are registered for the "Yoga for Lovers" class earlier in the evening you will find that an excellent warm-up for this class.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

-Any two people in a "romantic" relationship.

-Any two people who want to learn and practice the arts of polarity in relationship and dance.

-Any two people who are wanting to deepen trust and intimacy in their relationship.

-Any two people who may just want to take things up to the next level.

-Any two people in a romantic relationship who want to learn how to move together in a social dance form.

IN THESE CLASSES couples will be introduced to simple tango techniques that they can at home as well as in the class. My goal is for you to be ready to social dance tango at the end of our six weeks. Our time is short and intense. We will focus on...

-Finding your balance

-Walking and "falling-through" balance

-Basic walk in open embrace and in closed embrace

-Ochos and the magic of compression/release

-Leading by "following the follow,"

-Following by "surrendering" into your flow.

NOTES

-For your first classes, sock feet are OK.

-For subsequent classes bring smooth-soled shoes or socks to put over your shoes (high heels for the "feminine" partner or follow; flats or low heels for the "masculine" partner or lead).

-The emphasis will be on safety and integrity. Only in a safe environment are we fully able to open to our deeper sexual polarity

I've been dancing tango since I went to Buenos Aires in 2007. I've been practising yoga daily for over 40 years.

Occasionally I work with a feminine-identified colleague and may invite one to co-teach with me. These offerings can be found at sacredbodies.ca/events

Longer programs I offer for men and couples can be found at sacredbodies.ca or sacredbodies.ca/events

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know anything about yoga or tango?

No. Both parts of the class are accessible to absolute beginners --and of value to even advanced yoga practitioners or tango dancers.

Do I need to be in a "couple" relationship?

No. There is space for 1-2 singles in each class. You may also invite a "practice partner," someone you trust to share both the yoga and tango experience with, as part of your journey towards a deeper understanding of what's available to you if and when might enter into a romantic relationship.

Are non-binary participants welcome?

Yes. I use the language of "masculine" and "feminine" energies in my class, but these are about energetic polarities (yogic concepts), not about binary sexual or gender orientation.

Do I need fancy gear - ie. dance shoes, clothes, yoga stuff?

No. The studio has yoga mats (if you like to practice with a bolster/pillow for seated practice I recommend bringing your own). As for the tango, you're very welcome to start your dancing with socks pulled over sneakers (to give you some "slide"). You will need comfortable clothes to move in.
