Event description

Description

Join us for a workshop for youth and adults 12 and up led by After Gold Mountain artist Marlene Yuen, co-presented by the Workers Arts & Heritage Centre and Centre[3] for Print and Media Art.

Saturday, June 24th, 2017, 1-4 pm at Centre[3] for Print and Media Art, 173 James Street North, Hamilton.

Zine making is a form of self-publishing dealing with topics sometimes too controversial or niche for the mainstream: racism, politics, punk rock, feminism. Making zines allows anyone to self publish on any topic of interest (cats, food, poetry, work). What all zines have in common is that their writers feel like they have something important to say and that they would like to share with others.

Inspired by Marlene Yuen's exhibition, After Gold Mountain, participants will create a zine about a migration labour story, their first job, short memoir, or anything that may come to mind.

In this workshop, participants will discover the potential of book arts with three easy hand-made book making techniques. Everyone will learn how to fold, cut, and glue an accordion book, a 2D & 3D instabook (zine), and a poster fold-up zine. Marlene Yuen will also demonstrate some book cover embellishment using basic screen printing techniques.

This workshop costs a materials fee of $10 (sliding scale) and is open to youth and adults 12 and up. Pre-registration is required by phone or email, or through Eventbrite. Workshop fee can be paid via credit card over the phone, or in cash on the day of the workshop.
