On May 31st, the Philippine Women Centre of BC (PWC-BC) will be having a one-day conference titled “History, Rupture and Continuity: Creating and Nurturing Our New Path.” To be held at YWCA Vancouver, this conference is set to bring out and further the resistance of workers, women and youth as part of social transformation in Canada and beyond. Through discussions on previous academic collaborations, a sharing of experiences by community members and more, this conference will mark a new juncture in the community’s struggle as members of the working-class in Canada.
As a growing community of over 600,000, the Filipino Canadian community continues to face systemic barriers that prevent their genuine development and attainment of their entitlements. As part of PWC’s work in educating, organizing and mobilizing the community, it continues to address these barriers through advancing its key concerns of: overcoming economic marginalization, combatting systemic racism, enhancing Filipino women’s equality, human rights and genuine development and making the youth count in Canada’s future. By reviewing PWC’s past and current work, this conference will place our women, youth and workers on the map of the working-class struggle.
Panel discussions will highlight the collaborative work of academics Geraldine Pratt, Habiba Zaman and Shauna Butterwick with PWC, as well as sharings from the workers, women and youth. This conference will mark another milestone in the community’s struggle for genuine settlement, integration and full participation. All are invited to register; spaces are limited.
