Description

Urgency Around Permanency National Summit
Exploring Best Practices

(to find permanent families for vulnerable Canadian children and youth with disAbilities)
November 4 - 5, 2015
Ottawa, Ontario

The Adoption Council of Canada (ACC) cordially invites you to join us at the Urgency Around Permanency Summit: Exploring Best Practices. We need your unique perspective as we discuss why tens of thousands of children and youth remain in foster and group care across Canada, and what we can do to ensure they do not age out of care into homelessness, without permanent families.

This year, due to popular demand, the Summit is a two-day event on Wednesday, November 4th and Thursday, November 5th, 2015. Our second Summit will once again bring together Canada's child welfare community. We are inviting you to share your best practices that have resulted in finding permanent families (including kinship care, customary care, legal guardianship, and adoption) for all our children and youth.

Peer presentations will highlight initiatives that work in securing life-long, permanent connections for children and youth in government care, particularly those with visible and invisible disabilities.

On the agenda:

  • Prominent Speakers

Keynote: The Honourable Bob Rae
Ontario's 21st Premier and former interim leader, Liberal
Party of Canada. A lawyer, mediator, author and speaker,
Bob is focusing on Aboriginal and
governance issues.

Keynote: "Songs & Stories" by Susan Aglukark
"Susan Aglukark is truly one of Canada's most significant
cultural treasures. Apart from being a beautiful singer and
powerful songwriter, she provides a significant view to
the culture of our northern communities."
- Deane Cameron

  • Launch the ACC's Best Practices Guidebook and Training
  • Exploring permanency for Aboriginal children and youth
  • A Youth Speak Out panel will share youth perspectives about being in care and aging out of care
  • Networking opportunities to learn from colleagues
  • Ways to make permanency a priority in every province/territory
  • Dismantling barriers to permanency for children and youth in the child welfare system
  • Much more to come
