About this event

1 Double Occpancy Spot Left - Female
1 Single Occupancy Room Left

Banff National Park is absolutely stunning in its autumnal colours and makes for a perfect time to escape to the vibrant palette of nature with Nikon Ambassadors Monika Deviat and Viktoria Haack. The park offers a wide variety of natural beauty with colourful foliage, brilliant alpine lakes, and majestic mountains. The workshop is split into basecamps. We will start at the Juniper Hotel and Bistro just outside of the town of Banff and spend two nights focusing on scenes around the town. For the second part, we will be based out of the Lake Louise Inn, allowing easier access to locations like Moraine Lake and the Icefields Parkway.

There are so many diverse possibilities for photography on this workshop! From intimate landscape and fall colours to the grand vista, dark skies for night photography, and also the opportunity for wildlife photography (the Elk Rut will be on!). We will have the opportunity to visit many iconic locations as well as lesser known areas of the park. Our goal is to help you develop your own personal vision and we hope to inspire you to have fun creating in whatever conditions we encounter. We will offer help with night photography techniques, focus stacking, long exposures, long lens creativity, and any other approaches or techniques participants have an interest in developing.

Your instructors will cover safety, ethics, respect for animals, and photography tips ahead of time.

Weather can vary in September, with averages of 2°C to 17°C, but we could expect temperatures below zero.

"When I heard that Viktoria and Monika were leading this workshop, it was obvious to me that one will benefit tremendously from their expertise. Both have a wealth of knowledge that they are excited to share. Both of them are patient and encourage one to try new things such as slow exposure, close-up and wildlife photography and of course, technically difficult subjects such as how to photograph the milky way. Viktoria and Monika rotated among the group, giving each person their one-on-one attention. One did not feel rushed and no question was too simple or too complicated to address. A well organized few days which I can highly recommend to someone wanting to improve their skill level." - Rina A. | Escape to Nature Waterton

Planning

Planning shoots, at any time of day or night is an important part of being able to create compelling and purposeful images. We'll go over weather apps, how to plan for light (or no light), scouting tips, etc. Even how to approach a subject when you see it takes a little bit of planning, too. Your workshop leaders are available to guide you and your thought processes to help you achieve your creative vision.

Techniques

This workshops allows for participants to try a lot of techniques if they choose. Some subjects like night photography require working in manual mode, while for others we can use semi-automatic modes as well. We will go over ISO, white balance, aperture choices, and shutter speeds. Different methods of focusing will be covered for each subject we will be shooting. During the landscape shoots for example, we'll go over focus stacking, bracketing, long exposures, depth of field, panoramas and more.

Safety & Leave No Trace

These are very important topics for photographers to be knowledgable about in order to preserve the places we love to visit, keep wildlife wild and make sure you stay safe and (mostly) comfortable on your adventures.

Organized by

Monika Deviat is an award-winning photographer, educator and speaker and Nikon Ambassador based in Alberta, Canada. Monika’s photography spans multiple genres and demonstrates her versatility, technical skills, and unique perspective. Her career began with concert photography, taking her across North America to shoot hundreds of bands and dozens of festivals. In 2015, she shifted from shooting stars on stage to stars in the sky. Night photography has become Monika’s personal favourite genre, and it goes hand in hand with her landscape and adventure images. She is driven to capture unique scenes that inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation for the wild places surrounding us. Her photos have been published in national and international books, magazines, and webzines. As a workshop instructor, Monika is passionate about sharing knowledge and creating memorable experiences.

"Monika is obviously a great photographer who takes pride in the moments that she creates. What is not so obvious, and more importantly in my opinion, is that she enjoys educating people and is a great person. I have had the pleasure of taking a night photography editing course taught by her and have been in attendance for one of her night photography seminars. The passion that she has for the art of photography definitely shows through. In her course, she takes the time to teach. When she helps, she will give you her undivided attention at making sure you succeed in what you are trying to do. If you do not understand something that she presents, she will patiently ensure that what she is trying to convey makes sense to you.

Furthermore, she enjoys sharing information and this is evidenced by her personal blog and other articles that she has published. These are the traits of someone who truly enjoys teaching about their craft.

I can say that in the past years that I have known her, she is a pleasure to be around because she not only remembers people but takes the time to actually talk. If you have an opportunity to learn from her, either by taking a course, listening to her talk, or hiring her as either as an instructor or as a photographer, please do so. You will have no regrets."
