About this event

Waterton offers many diverse possibilities for photography! From intimate landscapes and wildflowers to the grand vista, dark skies for night photography, and an incredible diversity of abundant wildlife. Your renowned instructors Monika Deviat and Viktoria Haack both love shooting everything in nature, from tiny details to grand landscapes. If you've never been to the park or would like to expand your familiarity, we'd love to introduce you to Waterton and give you some tips on exploring and photography.

These workshop sessions take place before the Lightchasers Conference. It's a wonderful opportunity to meet people, learn, and get a great deal on a photography workshop and guided experience. If you want to visit the park on your own during or after the Conference, this will help you make the most of your time and guide some of your creative ideas. You're welcome to join for one or both of the sessions!

Sunrise Session:

We will meet for a sunrise landscape session. Your instructors will choose the location based on the forecast and the best opportunities for images. Participants can expect to be on location around 5 am.

Sunset Session:

We will meet at 5 pm for exploration to start! The forecast and conditions will guide our choice of the final sunset spot for landscape photography.

We're expecting to see wildlife, so your instructors will cover safety, respect for animals, and photography tips ahead of time.

Each session length is 4 hours
Cost: 140 CAD + GST & Fees
Max 10 persons in each session

Planning

Planning shoots, at any time of day or night is an important part of being able to create compelling and purposeful images. We'll can show the weather apps we use, how to plan for light (or no light), scouting tips, etc. Even how to approach a subject when you see it takes a little bit of planning, too. Your workshop leaders are available to guide you and your thought processes to help you achieve your creative vision.

Techniques

If you have questions about specific techniques, we are here to help! Some subjects require working in manual mode, while for others we can use semi-automatic modes. We can help with choosing ISO, white balance, aperture choices, and shutter speeds. Different methods of focusing will be covered. During the landscape shoots for example, you can ask us about focus stacking, bracketing, long exposures, depth of field, panoramas and more.

Safety & Leave No Trace

These are very important topics for photographers to be knowledgable about in order to preserve the places we love to visit, keep wildlife wild and make sure you stay safe and (mostly) comfortable on your adventures.

Organized by

Monika Deviat is an award-winning photographer, educator and speaker and Nikon Ambassador based in Alberta, Canada. Monika’s photography spans multiple genres and demonstrates her versatility, technical skills, and unique perspective. Her career began with concert photography, taking her across North America to shoot hundreds of bands and dozens of festivals. In 2015, she shifted from shooting stars on stage to stars in the sky. Night photography has become Monika’s personal favourite genre, and it goes hand in hand with her landscape and adventure images. She is driven to capture unique scenes that inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation for the wild places surrounding us. Her photos have been published in national and international books, magazines, and webzines. As a workshop instructor, Monika is passionate about sharing knowledge and creating memorable experiences.

"Monika is obviously a great photographer who takes pride in the moments that she creates. What is not so obvious, and more importantly in my opinion, is that she enjoys educating people and is a great person. I have had the pleasure of taking a night photography editing course taught by her and have been in attendance for one of her night photography seminars. The passion that she has for the art of photography definitely shows through. In her course, she takes the time to teach. When she helps, she will give you her undivided attention at making sure you succeed in what you are trying to do. If you do not understand something that she presents, she will patiently ensure that what she is trying to convey makes sense to you.

Furthermore, she enjoys sharing information and this is evidenced by her personal blog and other articles that she has published. These are the traits of someone who truly enjoys teaching about their craft.

I can say that in the past years that I have known her, she is a pleasure to be around because she not only remembers people but takes the time to actually talk. If you have an opportunity to learn from her, either by taking a course, listening to her talk, or hiring her as either as an instructor or as a photographer, please do so. You will have no regrets."
